Giethoorn, the Netherlands 🇳🇱 — Canals, Thatched Houses & a Fairytale Boat Ride

Giethoorn, the Netherlands
- A Fairytale Day Trip from Amsterdam

Discovering the fairytale village of Giethoorn on a day trip from Amsterdam.

Some places look beautiful in photos. Then you arrive, see them with your own eyes, and understand why everyone talks about them.

Giethoorn was one of those places.

A small village in the Dutch countryside, famous for its peaceful canals, wooden bridges, and charming thatched-roof houses. It looks almost unreal, like someone took a little piece of a storybook and placed it in the middle of the Netherlands.

I had seen the pictures, of course. But I wanted to experience it myself, especially from the water.

So, during my Netherlands trip, I booked a day trip from Amsterdam with GetYourGuide, packed my camera, and set off to discover this little fairytale village.

And between the boat ride, endless house photos, an Aperol break, and an unexpected amount of rain, Giethoorn gave me quite a day.

Practical Tips for Visiting Giethoorn

  • 🚍 Getting there: Giethoorn is roughly a two-hour road journey from Amsterdam. A guided day trip is convenient if you don’t want to organize transport yourself.
  • 🚤 Take a canal cruise: The one-hour guided cruise was my favorite part of the experience.
  • 📸 Bring your camera: The canals, bridges, and thatched-roof houses are incredibly photogenic.
  • 👟 Explore on foot, too: Walking gives you time to appreciate the village beyond the boat route.
  • 🌧️ Pack a rain jacket: Dutch weather can change, so be prepared even if the forecast looks promising.
  • 🍹 Leave time for a break: Don’t fill every minute with sightseeing. Enjoy a drink or sit by the water for a while.
The arrival

Getting to Giethoorn from Amsterdam takes roughly two hours by road, so this is definitely a full-day adventure rather than a quick afternoon detour.

I booked a guided day trip with transportation included, which made everything much easier. No figuring out connections or worrying about how to get back, just show up, enjoy the journey, and let someone else handle the logistics.

The first views of Giethoorn were exactly what I had hoped for: canals winding between beautiful houses, little bridges crossing the water, and boats gliding past the gardens.

My camera was ready. My expectations were high.

And thankfully, Giethoorn gave me plenty of reasons to keep taking pictures.

The Canal Cruise: Giethoorn from the Water
— The Must-Sees

If there was one thing I really wanted to experience in Giethoorn, it was a boat ride through its famous canals. And this turned out to be the highlight of my visit.

The tour included a one-hour guided canal cruise with a local skipper, taking us through the village’s picturesque waterways. From the boat, I could see the houses, gardens, wooden bridges, and little details that make Giethoorn so distinctive.

There is something special about seeing a place from the water. You aren’t rushing from one attraction to another or constantly checking a map. You’re simply moving through the scenery, watching the village unfold around you.

We passed under bridges, glided alongside the houses, and enjoyed those postcard-perfect views that make you want to take a photo every few seconds.

And yes, I took a lot of photos. A lot.

But honestly, it wasn’t just about getting the perfect shot. The experience itself was lovely: sitting back, watching the scenery pass by, and enjoying a slower pace for a change. I could easily have spent longer on that boat.

If you’re planning a Giethoorn day trip, I’d absolutely make time for a canal cruise. Walking around the village is wonderful, but seeing it from the water gives you a completely different perspective.

Wandering Between Canals and Thatched Houses

After the cruise, I had time to explore Giethoorn on foot. This is when I could slow down, cross the little bridges, admire the houses up close, and stop whenever something caught my eye.

The village is known for its traditional thatched-roof cottages, gardens, and waterways. Many houses sit on small islands connected by bridges, creating the landscape that has made Giethoorn so famous.

Everywhere I looked, there was another detail worth photographing. A beautiful garden. A little boat beside a house. Reflections dancing on the water. Another charming bridge.

I kept wandering without a strict plan, which is often my favorite way to explore a place. You don’t always need a checklist of attractions. Sometimes you just need comfortable shoes, a camera, and enough time to get distracted by everything around you.

Giethoorn is particularly photogenic, so if you enjoy photography, bring your camera or make sure your phone has plenty of battery. You will probably need it!

A Little Aperol Break

Of course, sightseeing requires occasional breaks. After all that walking and photographing, I found time to sit down and enjoy an Aperol.

It was one of those simple travel moments that doesn’t necessarily make it into a list of must-see attractions, but somehow becomes part of the memory. No rushing. No trying to squeeze in another landmark. Just a drink, a little pause, and time to enjoy being somewhere new.

Giethoorn had already delivered the canals and the fairytale houses. This was my chance to slow down and enjoy the atmosphere before heading back.

And then the weather decided it was time to add its own contribution to the story.

The Unexpected

Giethoorn gave me everything I expected: beautiful canals, charming houses, a lovely boat cruise, and approximately a million photographs.

What I didn’t plan for was the pouring rain on my way back to the bus!

One minute, I was enjoying a picturesque Dutch village. The next, I was walking through the rain, trying to make my way back for the journey to Amsterdam.

So much for the perfect fairytale ending!

But that’s travel. You can plan the transport, book the experience, and organize your day, but you can’t control the weather.

And honestly, it made the day more memorable. The beautiful scenery was still there, the boat ride was still my favorite part, and I had another travel story to tell.

Lessons, Surprises & Magic

Giethoorn reminded me that sometimes the simplest experiences are the ones you remember most.

A boat gliding through quiet canals. A beautiful house you stop to photograph for the fifth time. An Aperol break. And a very Dutch downpour just when you think the day is over.

The canal cruise was the highlight for me, and I’m glad I made time to explore the village on foot, too.

Would I recommend Giethoorn as a day trip from Amsterdam? Absolutely, especially if you love picturesque villages, photography, and slower travel experiences.

Just bring a rain jacket. Apparently, even fairytales in the Netherlands need one.

And if you visit, don’t forget to look up from your camera every now and then.

Some views are worth remembering without a photo.
